“Add ginger” does not always say whether it means fresh or ground. That small detail helps you follow a recipe and keep a useful record of a successful attempt.

The word that changes the preparation
Fresh and ground ginger are forms worth specifying in a recipe. Write ‘ground’ beside the quantity rather than keeping only the spice’s name. Avoid improvising a conversion between a weight of fresh ginger and spoonfuls of powder.
On its own or among four spices
Ginger also appears in the Four Spices name alongside nutmeg, coriander and black pepper. Choosing that blend introduces the whole combination. Keep the packet and your notes so you can repeat the dish without attributing its entire result to ginger alone.
